Do I have to attend a pre-med course?
It is not necessary to attend a course prior to applying to medical school and none of the medical schools in Britain expect applicants to have been on a course. The main reasons for attending are for students to gain a much more detailed insight into the many facets of a medical career and understand the pros and cons of being a doctor. Furthermore, our course will show you what it is like to be a medical student and you will obtain useful life skills with certificates, which can add to your CV.
What is the minimum age for attending Medi-Quest?
The minimum age is 15
What other benefits are there from attending the Medi-Quest course?
There are a number of additional advantages from attending our course. You will be able to meet and chat to medical students and ask about their experiences of getting into medical school. You will be given lots of helpful tips and advice about how to strengthen your CV, produce a good application form and avoid some of the potential pitfalls in interviews. Most importantly you will see the medical career from many viewpoints, which will consolidate the resolve of those who really want to do medicine and enlighten those who have not yet made up their mind.
What do I need to bring with me?
We will provide a light pre-course breakfast, drinks throughout the day, a substantial buffet lunch, writing materials and notebooks, a conference bag, handouts and even a stethoscope to use in the afternoon hands-on sessions. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm (preferably after a good night's sleep) in preparation for an exciting, interactive and comprehensive Medi-Quest course. You do not need to bring anything along as we will not be charging for any extras (unlike most other courses!)
Will I have to take notes?
This will be up to you, you will be provided with a copy of all the relevant handouts from the lectures.
I would really like to join in the practical sessions, but I think the lectures will be more important, do I have to choose?
NO, the day is especially timetabled so that you can attend all parts of the course.
Will I need to purchase anything else on the day?
No, some courses charge extra for additional sessions and you have to provide your own refreshments and meals. Medi-Quest courses are all-inclusive of food, handouts, gifts, teaching sessions and certificates so you can leave your money behind.
What should I wear?
We recommend smart casual clothes, which you feel comfortable in. Don't get the urge to dress up in shirts, ties and blouses - this is an informal course and we want you to feel at ease. Save your best gear for your interview!
Can I bring my friends?
As we limit the numbers on the course, we can't accommodate non-participants. The good news is that we offer a discount to groups of 5 or more so like-minded friends can save money if they book together.
Can my parents attend?
As we limit the numbers on the course, we can’t accommodate non-participants. If parents, friends or family are dropping you off, there are numerous interesting activities going on in Manchester, Salford Quays and the Trafford centre all within 10 minutes away.
Can you give me a few links to bodies that may be useful to me?
Here are a few that could be relevant to a student wanting to study medicine:
UCAS
UKCAT
BMAT
British Medical Journal (BMJ)
Student British Medical Journal (Student BMJ)
British Medical Association (BMA)
BBC: Inside the NHS
Will this course guarantee me a place in medical school?
Sadly no. You still have to do the tests, application and interviews yourself and obtain the right grades in your exams. But, by finding out more about medicine, student life, medical careers, university courses, UKCAT and by avoiding potential hurdles we want you to feel more confident that you can face the challenges of the application process and give yourself the best chance of success.
